Woman dies in Prince George’s County house fire on Christmas

WASHINGTON — A family is dealing with tragedy Christmas morning after a woman died in a house fire in Prince George’s County.

The fire started at about 2:15 a.m. Thursday at a two-story duplex in the 900 block of Booker Drive in Capitol Heights.

Prince George’s County Fire says a smoke alarm went off in the duplex, but a man inside could not get through the intense heat and smoke to help his 87-year-old mother.

After the fire was extinguished, firefighters found the woman dead. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The estimated cost of damage caused by the fire is not yet known.

On Friday, firefighters say they will go door-to-door in the Booker Drive neighborhood and answer any questions residents may have about the fire and check to ensure everyone is protected by a working smoke alarm.

Below is a map with the location of the fire.
