Arrestee escaped DC psych unit through back door

WASHINGTON (AP) — More details have been released in the escape of a man who had been taken to the Psychiatric Institute of Washington after being arrested on charges of assaulting an officer, having unregistered ammunition and being a fugitive from justice.

The D.C. Department of Corrections says that Kenneth Clayton escaped Monday after going through initial processing at the Psychiatric Institute, in Northwest Washington. Clayton was moved to a locked area of the facility where uniformed personnel aren’t allowed for medical privacy protocols.

Shortly after being taken there, the corrections department says Clayton fled through a back-door exit of the restricted wing.

Corrections officers searched the surrounding area soon after but couldn’t find Clayton, who remains loose.

Local and federal agencies are actively searching for Clayton.
