United’s flurry of 1st-half goals stuns KC 3-0

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — D.C. United shocked Sporting Kansas City with three first-half goals in an eight-minute span for a 3-0 victory on Saturday night in a matchup of the top teams in the MLS Eastern Conference.

Fabian Espindola scored in the 24th minute, Chris Rolfe in the 28th and Perry Kitchen in the 31st to move United (13-7-4) one point ahead of Sporting KC (12-7-6) into the conference top spot. Luis Silva assisted on the first two goals with Rolfe assisting the third.

United earned a 2-0-0 sweep of the season series and its first win in Kansas City in the 10 matches since 2007.

Sporting KC pressed forward for some good chances in the second half, including Graham Zusi’s shot off the crossbar in the 60th minute.

But Bill Hamid recorded his sixth shutout of the season to preserve the win, highlighted by a diving save on Dominic Dwyer’s header in the 73rd minute.
