Former Culpeper mayor appeals sex crime conviction

CULPEPER, Va. (AP) — Former Culpeper Mayor Chip Coleman is appealing a sexual battery conviction.

The Free Lance-Star reports (http://bit.ly/1pYLTcy ) that Coleman will appear in circuit court Oct. 20. Coleman was convicted in general district court earlier this month of hugging a woman and rubbing his chest against hers after a Christmas party. The woman testified that Coleman continued to press against her after she told him to stop.

Judge Edward Carpenter ruled there was some use of force and “sexual intent.”

Coleman, who was defeated for re-election in May, was given a 10-day suspended jail sentence and fined $2,500.
