July is a great month for refreshing wine that will not only brighten up your palate but also your day. There are many varietals of wine that are perfect for this time of year — and not just white wine.

Summer sippers are wines that taste better when you’re sitting out on the patio. They’re refreshing, light and quench your thirst. You don’t think too much about what you’re drinking, you just open and enjoy.

Here are five delicious summer sippers we currently have in stock at Georgetown Square Wine and Beer in Bethesda and Downtown Crown Wine and Beer in Gaithersburg:

Quinta da Aveleda Vinho Verde WhiteQuinta da Aveleda Vinho Verde White 2013 Portugal

Vinho Verde is not a grape varietal. It literally means “green wine” but translates as “young wine.” Vinho Verde is to be consumed with a year of bottling so you can enjoy the natural fizz that comes with such a young wine. Aveleda is a perennial summer favorite of mine. This Vinho Verde delivers the goods, the fizzy, citrus drenched delicious flavors. Perfect for the patio.

DMZ Cabernet RoseDMZ Cabernet Rose 2013 South Africa

Rose is a great year-round food wine, but It’s particularly handy in the summer because it pairs with everything. You go to barbecue and there’s potato salad, brats, burgers, ribs and rose works well with all those flavors, especially DMZ Rose. I have mentioned DMZ Rose before in this column and just had to again. It’s one of my all-time favorite Roses at less than $15. DMZ Rose will literally brighten up your palate with its full-bodied character. It’s not your typical water downed dry rose.

Fraccia Voulet Casorzo 2012 Italy

If you prefer sweet wines, Fraccia Voulet is a must try. Fraccia is a unique sweet red wine with a slight effervescent fizz. It’s light, refreshingly sweet, low in alcohol and tastes like fresh strawberries. Made from 100 percent Malvasia grapes from Italy’s Piedmont region, this wine is very addictive.

Poema Cava Brut NV Spain

I had to add a summer sipper with some bubbles in it and Poema Cava is my choice. For those who have expensive taste for champagne but don’t always want to open up the wallet for a nice night on the porch, look no further than this one. At $13, Poema Cava is value and quality that you would normally pay upwards of $20-$30 for.

Murphy Goode Pinot NoirMurphy Goode Pinot Noir 2012 California

Pinot Noir can come in a myriad of styles, from light and refreshing to deep, dark and earthy. When choosing a Pinot Noir to enjoy in the summer, look for lighter styles with lots of cherry and red berry flavors.

Pinots can also be found at a number of different price ranges, but for patio purposes there’s no reason you should spend more than $15. Murphy Goode Pinot Noir is a perfect choice. At around $13, you can put this wine in the fridge for a few minutes then open up and enjoy a nice light red on the porch.
