In a land swap, WPC will build a new homeless shelter at no cost to Montgomery County in exchange for the land upon which the current shelter sits, GlobeSt.com reports. That land, made up of three parcels totaling 1.5 acres, is next door to WPC’s Solaire-Silver Spring property and will become home to a second phase which will have 380 apartments.
The new homeless shelter, to carry the same name as the old one — Progress Place — will be built at 8110 Georgia Avenue. The four-floor building will have transitional living space on the top floor and three floors of services for the homeless beneath. Groundbreaking is expected in about 12 months.
