DC’s next food craze? Cake pops

A lawyer turned baker is turning her online cake pop business into a brick-and-mortar venture, and she’s picked a good location for her first store.

Yael Krigman, who has been selling her cake and frosting balls on a stick online since 2011, has signed a lease for space directly across from the National Zoo at 3000 Connecticut Avenue, in the former Cathedral Custom Cleaners, and hopes to open her store by November.

Baked by Yael will be a “cakepoppery,” meaning the cake pops be baked on site, and dipped and decorated in front of customers. Krigman also plans to have space available for cake pop parties.

She’ll continue to sell other baked goods, including hand made bagels and black & white cookies.

Krigman, who has been looking for a retail location for two years, raised almost $75,000 in funding on Kickstarter.

Until the Connecticut Avenue cakepoppery opens for business, Krigman continues her online business with a pick-up location at Weygandt Wine in Cleveland Park.

“Five years from now there will be Cakepopperies all over D.C. and the country,” Krigman says in her Kitckstarter pitch. “Get in on the ground floor of something big, and help me build the first one.”
