122-year-old Baltimore school becomes housing

BALTIMORE (AP) — Officials in Baltimore have turned a school building that is more than 100 years old into housing.

Officials on Wednesday celebrated the renovation of the building that once housed Columbus School #99. The building on East North Avenue is now the now the Columbus School Apartments and houses 50 one- and two-bedroom units for qualified city residents.

The building’s developer says the renovations took 16 months to complete and cost $13 million. The building is open to families with incomes of 60 percent or less of the median income for Baltimore.

The Columbus School was originally built in 1891 and expanded between 1905 and 1912. The school closed in the 1970s. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
