NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Norfolk-based destroyer has arrived at its new homeport in Spain.
The guided-missile destroyer Ross arrived Monday in Rota, Spain, after departing Naval Base Norfolk on June 3, according to The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1pBuOFZ).
It is the second of four destroyers to transfer to the U.S. naval base in Spain, including the Norfolk-based Donald Cook. The Cook left Virginia in February.
The ships are being deployed as part of the Obama administration’s four-phase plan to put land- and sea-based radars and interceptors in several European locations over the next decade.
The plan was developed in 2009 to protect against a potential Iranian nuclear threat and approved by NATO the following year.
