French Navy ship to visit Yorktown

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A French Navy ship making its way to Norfolk will make a slight detour next week.

The U.S. Navy says the frigate La Fayette will anchor in the York River in Yorktown on June 2.

The Navy says in a news release the ship will honor French sailors and soldiers and their American allies that participated in the siege of Yorktown in 1781. The siege resulted in the surrender of British forces in the last major battle of the American Revolution.

The La Fayette will participate in a 21-gun salute next week and 30 French sailors will lay a wreath at the Monument to Victory and Alliance. Visitors for the ceremony are welcome and encouraged to park at the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center.
