Overturned tractor-trailer causes delays on Route 29/Lee Highway in Va.

WASHINGTON – An overturned tractor-trailer carrying compost caused major delays for commuters on Route 29/Lee Highway in Warrenton, Va., Monday morning.

The crash happened on Route 29/Lee Highway between Lovers Lane and the south end of Warrenton Route 15/Eastern Bypass at about 3:30 a.m. The crash closed all southbound lanes to traffic.

After the crash, police closed the northbound lanes of Route 29/Lee Highway and traffic alternated in one direction at a time, under police direction. All lanes reopened to traffic by about 8:30 a.m.

The tractor-trailer was carrying 44,000 pounds of compost, which spilled onto the roadway, says Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller. The tractor-trailer was set back upright by about 7:40 a.m.

Some commuters were stuck in the backup for several hours.

Doug Lingenrfelter says it took him just less than five hours to get through the backup. He left his job in Fairfax County at 3 a.m. to head to his home in Culpeper County when he got stuck in the delay. He finally arrived home at 7:50 a.m., he says.

Officials have not released information about what caused the crash. No one was injured, Geller says.
