Paying more bank fees and overdraft fees in D.C.

WASHINGTON – Consumers are paying more fees to their banks than they were a few years ago as free checking accounts are more difficult to secure and banks raise rates.

The Washington Business Journal reports that ATM and checking account overdraft fees are about average in the Washington market, according to Bankrate.com.

The average fee for using an ATM outside of your bank’s own network in Washington is $4.05, down 3 percent from last year. The average overdraft fee is $32.12, up 4 percent.

Nationally, the average ATM fee is $4.13, a record high and up 2 percent from 2012. Overdraft fees also rose to a record high $32.20.

Denver has the highest average ATM fee at $4.70. Baltimore has the lowest at $3.59.

Milwaukee has the highest average overdraft fee at $34.16. San Francisco has the lowest at $27.18.

Monthly maintenance fees pack  more punch
