Scam alert: Beware of WSSC impersonators

WASHINGTON – A scam alert is going out to Montgomery and Prince George’s county residents after some area residents reported utility impersonators are trying to gain access to homes and businesses to gain information for identity theft or fraud.

The Washington Suburban Sanitation Commission issued a release Wednesday saying none of the incidents has involved WSSC customers, but encouraged everyone to be cautious.

WSSC asked customers to remember these facts:

  • All WSSC employees are required to carry and prominently display their WSSC photo ID badges. Customers should demand to see the employee’s ID badge for verification if they have doubts.
  • Check the vehicle the “employee” is driving. WSSC workers drive blue vans, trucks or cars, clearly marked with the WSSC name and water drop logo.
  • The majority of WSSC business in the field is conducted outside of homes.
  • WSSC employees will never conduct financial transactions in the field.
  • If you have suspicions, ask the person for their supervisor’s name and telephone number.

WSSC adds that if you see suspicious activities involving WSSC employees or vehicles, call local police and contact WSSC at 301-206-8888.
