Rare bird’s-eye view of Washington Monument repairs

WASHINGTON – A heightened view from repair crews hanging off the top of the Washington Monument is captivating viewers.

The video, released by the National Park Service, shows the National Mall and surrounding grounds from a high-definition helmet camera worn by some of the contractors repairing the monument.

The monument is completely covered in scaffolding while structural repairs are underway following a 5.8-magnitude earthquake felt in the D.C. area in 2011.

The National Park Service selected contractor Perini Management Services, Inc. of Framingham, Mass., in late September 2011 to lead the $15 million repair project.

The monument is not expected to reopen to visitors until next year.
