Virginia school system treated for bedbugs

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) – Two Portsmouth schools are sealing students’ backpacks and coats in plastic following the discovery of bedbugs on two students.

A letter sent to parents says the items will be returned to students at the end of each day. The practice began Monday and could continue for a month.

Portsmouth schools spokeswoman Nita Mensia-Joseph tells media outlets that I.C. Norcom High School and Lakeview Elementary School were treated for bedbugs as a precaution. Bedbugs weren’t found in either school. Two school buses also were treated.

She says one bedbug was found on a Lakeview student last Thursday as the child was getting on a school bus.

A school nurse at Norcom found the other bedbug last Friday after a student complained of itching.
