WASHINGTON – Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell does not think closing the gun show loophole would be effective in curbing gun violence and does not think the state should get involved in the regulation of private sales.
“I want to do something that works, not just to make people feel good,” McDonnell said on Tuesday’s “Ask the Governor” show. “Whether you look at the Virginia Tech tragedy in Virginia, or Newtown, Conn., none of those things were related to people buying anything at a gun show.”
McDonnell answered a range of questions during the hour-long program, from gun control to transportation funding to improving the GOP brand.
“I’m focusing on what works, and to me it’s school safety, school resource officers, it’s mental health, better reporting to our databases,” he said. “These are the things that can actually make a difference.”
“The regulation of private sales I don’t think needs to be done.”
