WASHINGTON – His name is Pumpkin, but staffers at Prince George’s Animal Management Facility are calling him a hero.
Retired firefighter Lt. Billy Mills was running errands when he spotted smoke. He headed towards the fire, and when he got there, a black lab mix raced up to him.
The barking dog led Mills straight to a sliding glass door where he saw a disabled woman trapped inside the burning home.
While crews worked to bring the fire under control, Mills pulled the woman to safety.
The woman is currently recovering from burns and smoke inhalation, and Pumpkin is being housed at Prince George’s County Animal Management Facility.
Rodney Taylor, chief of Prince George’s County Animal Management Facility, describes Pumpkin as an awesome dog.
“Pumpkin has the whole staff excited about what he’s done,” says Taylor. “The staff is just loving on Pumpkin today.”
