‘Boomerang kids’ are trying to leave the nest – again

WASHINGTON – There’s some encouraging news for “boomerang kids,” adults who move back in with parents to save money.

Last year, then-vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan said, “College graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms.”

The 2006 movie “Failure to Launch” even made it a plot line. The romantic comedy starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker is all about a character who can’t seem to leave his parents’ house.

But Hollywood and politicians may need new material.

MSN Money reports that as the economy recovers, young adults are venturing out of the nest to live on their own, with friends or with significant others. The uptick has been occuring over the past two years.

Derek Thompson with The Atlantic also tells MSN that home prices and construction rates indicated that 2013 “could be the year our economy breaks out of ‘new normal’ growth and gets back to ‘normal normal’ growth.”

Increased housing costs could offset a better income, but it could also encourage people to venture out on their own.
