WASHINGTON – Wilson High School lost its appeal to get back into Thursday’s Turkey Bowl football game, leaving students to come to grips with the disappointment.

Peter Cahall, Wilson High’s principal, disagrees with the decision that one of Wilson’s players was ineligible. But he also says it is just a football game and acknowledges how hard it is for high schoolers to keep things in perspective sometimes.

“I felt like I had to do the appeal for the kids and make sure that no stone was left unturned,” he said. “We filed the appeal. We had our due process.”

Cahall says this turn of events creates a difficult but important teachable moment.

“Our kids worked hard, but the life lesson is life is tough sometimes,” he said. “You can’t teach that type of lesson anywhere else.”

He says the students have handled the situation and their disappointment remarkably well and it is now time for the school to move on.
