Local bear makes surprise backyard visit

LEESBURG, Va. – A Loudoun County woman says she was surprised by an unexpected visitor early this week — a black bear, rummaging on her back porch.

Elizabeth Lipovsky had the presence of mind to snap pictures of the black bear as it nosed around her home on Hogback Mountain Road.

“I thought it was a pretty significant sighting!” Lipovsky wrote in an email.

Wildlife experts say bears are normally shy, and in this area are primarily active at night, searching for food in trash cans, bird feeders, and pet dishes.

Black bears hibernate early November through March or April, depending on food availability, according to the Fairfax County government website.
