Non-smartphone users soon in the minority

WASHINGTON – If you don’t own a smartphone, you soon might be in the minority.

For the first time ever, more people own phones with apps and Internet access than other types of cellphones.

A study by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project finds 46 percent of Americans now have smartphones, a big jump from just last spring.

“From last year in May to this year in February, we saw about a 30 percent jump,” said Pew spokesman Aaron Smith.

“There are actually now more smartphone owners than people with more basic devices.”

The increase crosses gender, income and generation divides, Smith said. The only demographic that has not jumped on the smartphone bandwagon includes people 65 and older.

Another report from the Centers for Disease Control says about 30 percent of homes across the country have given up their landline telephones.
