Like history? Va., Md. towns among top places to retire

WASHINGTON – Two local towns have been named top retirement destinations for history buffs.

The magazine “Where to Retire” named Fredericksburg, Va. and Hagerstown, Md. two of its “8 Terrific Towns for History Lovers.”

The publication says it is the only magazine in America geared toward helping people with decisions about retirement relocation. The towns will be profiled in an upcoming feature story.

“Most of the fighting during the Civil War took place across the Dixie, where you’ll also find some of the nation’s best retirement towns, including Fredericksburg,” “Where to Retire” editor Mary Lu Abbott says in a news release. “Each town offers a unique perspective of the Civil War and ample opportunities for history buffs to share their knowledge as volunteers or continue their own studies of the war.”

Along with Fredericksburg, towns making the mag’s list include another in the Old Dominion — Lexington, Va. The others are:

  • Vicksburg, Miss.
  • Fayetteville, Ark.
  • Chattanooga, Tenn.
  • Savannah, Ga.
  • Charleston, S.C.
