Late presidential primary affects 2016 Montgomery County school schedule

WASHINGTON — A change in the voting schedule for the presidential primary will bring spring break to Montgomery County Public Schools a day earlier in 2016, the Montgomery County Board of Education has decided.

Originally, spring break was scheduled for March 25 to April 1, with a teacher work day scheduled for the following Monday, April 4. Voting day for the presidential primary was set for April 5.

However, an April 4 primary would have meant early voting would begin on Easter Sunday. Earlier this month, Governor Larry Hogan signed a bill that pushed the primary to April 26. In turn, the Montgomery County Board of Education voted Tuesday to move up the teacher work day originally scheduled for April 4 to March 24, one day before spring break was scheduled. Students will not have class that day.

Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers claims the schedule change will allow a cleaner break between marking periods, with the third marking period ending on March 23. This will also allow teachers to complete grades before spring break. The fourth marking period will begin when both students and teachers return from the break.
