Airbus to invest $1M in Ashburn parts warehouse

WASHINGTON — Airbus Americas will expand its parts distribution center in Ashburn as part of a newly consolidated operation for its Satair Group subsidiary with a $1 million investment and a pledge to add new employees to the current facility.

The Loudoun County Department of Economic Development says the county competed for the project with several other East Coast operations.

The expansion is contingent on the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approving a $200,000 commercial business incentive fund grant in the form of fee waivers and cash.

Airbus plans to expand the footprint of its distribution facility at 21780 Filigree Court and make technology investments. Another 10 or some employees are expected to be added as part of the expansion.

The Airbus Americas and Satair Group facility will be Airbus’ largest material distribution center by customer volume when the expansion is complete.

The Airbus distribution facility, which opened in 1991, currently has about 100 employees and operates 24 hours a day.

The 110,000-square-foot facility houses more than $200 million in spare parts, some 100,000 items ranging from small components to flaps, rudders and passenger doors.

Airbus expanded the facility in November, when it began stocking parts for its new Airbus 350 XWB.

The Ashburn facility is one of five parts distribution centers Airbus operates. Others are in Hamburg and Frankfurt, Germany, Beijing and Singapore.
