More than 3,000 expected to volunteer in DC area Saturday

WASHINGTON (AP) — More than 3,000 volunteers are expected to help revitalize neighborhood parks, beautify schools and stock food banks in the Washington area as part of a national volunteer effort led by Comcast.

The company says about 500 volunteers will join D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on Saturday to help clean up and improve Houston Elementary School in Washington. Volunteers will be painting murals, planting flowers and building vegetable gardens.

The Comcast Cares Day volunteer effort also is expected to include hundreds more volunteers at projects in suburban Maryland and Virginia.

In Maryland, volunteers will be working on projects with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Maryland, with the Downtown Frederick Partnership and with Interfaith Works in Rockville.

In Virginia, projects are planned with charities in Alexandria and across the area.
