Missing George Washington University student’s body recovered in South Africa

WASHINGTON — Authorities have located the body of a George Washington University student who went missing while studying abroad in South Africa.

The body of Nicholas Upton was located Friday — five days after he went missing while swimming of the coast of the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. Upton was a junior at George Washington University from Redding, Connecticut.

Vice Provost and Dean of Student Affairs Peter Konwerski said Monday that Upton had not been seen since swimming at about 10:30 p.m. local time. Upton has been studying abroad in South Africa and was traveling during a break from classes.

Konwerski let the university know about the development in an email Friday.

“Our hearts go out to Nick’s family and friends. He touched many during his time at GW, and he will be missed,” Konwerski wrote in the email.

Authorities in Cape Town searched for Upton and coordinated with the man’s family, study abroad program representatives and the U.S. Embassy.

The university is offering counseling services to students, faculty and staff affected by the news.

Upton was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity and the university’s rowing team.
