Reports: Former Seattle fire chief to take over in D.C.

WASHINGTON — D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser will announce her pick for a new chief for the D.C. Fire Department on Monday morning.

NBC Washington reports that Bowser will announce former Seattle Fire Chief Gregory Dean will take over for interim Chief Eugene Jones.

Jones took over after Kenneth Ellerbe resigned as chief in the wake of a slew of missteps by the fire department, including allegedly not helping a man who collapsed and later died across the street from a firehouse in Northeast.

Jones retired as Seattle’s chief in October of last year after a decade in charge, the Seattle Times reports. He was in the middle of a controversy about a year ago, after two firefighters and another woman were charged with assaulting a homeless man who had fallen asleep on a firefighters memorial in Seattle’s Pioneer Square, the Seattle Times says.
