Washington Gas moving HQ to The Wharf

WASHINGTON — WGL Holdings Inc., the parent company of Washington Gas, is moving its Washington Gas corporate headquarters to The Wharf development on D.C.’s Southwest Waterfront.

The move will relocate about 200 Washington Gas employees from its current corporate headquarters at 101 Constitution Ave. NW, which it has leased since 2003.

Washington Gas will occupy at least two floors of 1000 Maine Ave. SW, a 250,000-square-foot office building currently under construction. It has signed a 16-year lease for the space and expects to move in around summer 2018.

It also will contribute to the neighborhood’s energy efficiency goals.

Its subsidiary, WGL Energy Systems Inc., will own, operate and maintain a 39.3-kilowatt solar system that will power the common areas of an apartment building adjacent to its new headquarters at The Wharf.

“Our new home will improve the work environment for employees, accommodate future growth and be part of an exciting neighborhood,” said Terry McCallister, chairman and CEO of WGL Holdings, Inc. and Washington Gas.

“By supporting the common goal of maintaining healthy waterways and improving the surrounding environment, we’re contributing to the city’s clean energy renaissance.”

“We are thrilled that WGL — a diverse energy company so well established in the District — is making The Wharf its new home,” said Monty Hoffman, founder and CEO of PN Hoffman.

The Wharf project is being developed by PN Hoffman and Madison Marquette.

“WGL is a terrific anchor for The Wharf because we align on multiple levels, including commitment to sustainability, great respect for the environment, and a community-oriented approach to business.”

WGL has about 1,500 employees in the Washington region and 1.1 million customers.

In January, WGL agreed to be acquired by Canadian energy company AltaGas Ltd. in a deal worth about $6.4 billion, though that deal still requires regulatory approval.
