As a Philly kid, Kathy Stewart grew up on cheesesteaks and the spectacle of Mummer’s parades. But it was at Penn State where she discovered her love for radio.

After graduation and leaving “Happy Valley” (you got to love a place nicknamed “Happy Valley”) she found herself in TV news. Kathy worked in the news markets of Pittsburgh, Philly, and finally D.C., where she met her husband. She instantly acquired two amazing step-children and they welcomed their son shortly thereafter. He’s amazing too!

As a journalist she’s covered stories from the White House, to stories about people who have no house. While working in Philly on a dangerously frigid evening, city officials announced the homeless would be taken off the streets and placed in shelters.

After wrapping their first assignment, she and her crew were going to leave city hall for their next news story. It’s then she noticed a homeless man on the sidewalk. She grabbed the mayor’s bodyguard as he passed by and asked that he help. The homeless man was far from happy with Kathy, matter of fact, he actually took a swing at her. Fortunately he missed.

But she and her crew had discovered that all of the drivers had failed to show up, so none of the homeless was getting to the shelters as promised. That quickly changed once the mayor was notified.

Experiences like this keep journalists like her humble. And at WTOP she faces the full spectrum of journalistic storylines that only a major capital city like ours can offer.

She is honored to have the opportunity to tell your stories and although she mainly covers Virginia, you will hear her reporting from Maryland and D.C. too.

If you have a story that needs to be told, send Kathy an email.
