How to Be Aware of Product Recalls

November 19, 2009 - 12:00am
Last year, more than 5,000 recalls of products were initiated, but in spite of being warned about safety issues, a large percentage of them remain in use. Unfortunately, a major reason consumers still use recalled products is because they aren't aware of the recall.

In an effort to improve the response level to recalls, the six government agencies that have recall authority participate in a website that is "one-stop shopping" for consumers. The website makes it easy for consumers to check up on products, find out if their car has been the subject of a recall and a whole lot more.

The company that manufactures the product must issue a recall by first class mail if it has a list of customers, usually based on returned warranty cards. However, since not all products are easily tracked, such as cosmetics and food items, publicity becomes the avenue of warning for consumers.
