WTOP wins record number of Murrow Awards

July 21, 2009 - 3:34pm
WASHINGTON - We interrupt regularly scheduled programming to bring you some harmless self-promotion and a well-deserved pat on the back.

WTOP Radio has won five coveted National Edward R. Murrow Awards, including "Overall Excellence." It is the most in WTOP history and more than any other radio or television station in this year's competition.

The awards this year:

  • Best Feature Hard News for J.J. Green's "Hidden Hunter;"

  • Best Use of Sound for Brennan Haselton's "Cathedral Bells;"

  • Best Writing for Chris Core's "Core Values;"

  • Best Website for WTOP.com (this is the 2nd National Murrow in a row and the fourth in seven years for the Web site)

  • Overall Excellence

"This is a big credit to WTOP News Director Mike McMearty and the entire WTOP Newsroom," says Jim Farley, WTOP's Vice President of News & Programming.

Murrow Award winners are chosen by The Radio-Television News Directors Association.

The awards will be presented at the RTNDA Awards Dinner on Oct. 12 in New York.
