Jose Andres to blog for new National Geographic food website

Celebrity chef Jose Andres, whose D.C.-based ThinkFoodGroup owns a dozen popular Washington restaurants, will be among contributors to a new National Geographic website called NetGeoFood.com.

National Geographic says the site will cover a wide variety of food-related topics, including eating trends, feeding the world’s growing population and climate change.

Andres is one of five food experts who will blog weekly for the site. Others include food policy analyst Mary Beth Albright, science blogger Maryn McKenna, food blogger Jasmine Wiggins and food historian Rebecca Rupp.

“The new UN climate report shows that crop yields already are being adversely affected by a changing climate, and how we respond globally in creating a more resilient food system is very important now,” said Dennis Dimick, executive editor for the environment at National Geographic. “But we also recognize that food is central to our culture and is a source of great pleasure and comfort to people. We want to ensure we tackle all aspects of food — from the celebratory and fun to serious policy questions.”

National Geographic plans several other food-related projects. Its magazine begins a major food-related series in May. It will air a miniseries on the National Geographic Channel called “Eat: The Story of Food,” and it plans new food-related books, including a cookbook for children, this fall.

It will also open an exhibition at its D.C. museum called “Food: Our Global Kitchen” in October.
