KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The father of Tennessee guard Darius Thompson says his son is transferring to Virginia.

Lonnie Thompson said via text message Tuesday night his son has chosen to continue his career with Virginia. NCAA transfer rules will require the 6-foot-5 guard from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to sit out a year before playing for his new team in 2015-16.

Thompson started 10 games as a true freshman this past season and averaged 2.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game while helping Tennessee go 24-13 and reach an NCAA tournament regional semifinal.

Thompson and guard/forward A.J. Davis, who also just finished his freshman season, asked for releases after former Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin left to take over California’s program and was replaced by Donnie Tyndall.
