Smith, Tennessee St. swamp Edward Waters 58-6

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tom Smith ran for 151 yards and four touchdowns in his debut with Middle Tennessee State and the Tigers beat Edward Waters 58-6 on Saturday night

Smith, a junior, had 129 yards in two seasons at Tennessee. He easily surpassed that and scored his first collegiate touchdown on an 11-yard run in the second quarter that made it 23-0. His 3-yard run made it 30-6 at the half and he scored on 5- and 30-yard runs in the third quarter.

At the half, Tennessee State had 243 yards to just 18 and one first down for Edward Waters. Both teams had four turnovers at the half. The touchdown for Edward Waters was a 71-yard interception return by freshman James Reese.

Greg White added 98 yards and Martine Stephens 92 for TSU, which had 439 yards on the ground and 510 overall. Edward Waters (1-1) had 78 total yards.
