Monmouth races past Delaware State 52-21

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) — Kwabena Asante scored four touchdowns as Monmouth racked up its most points in a season opener to steamroll Delaware State 52-21 on Saturday.

Asante became the first Big South player to score four TDs in a season opener. He had scoring runs of 7, 13 and 14 yards as well as an 18-yard TD pass from Brandon Hill. Asante rushed for 155 yards on 22 carries and had two catches for 27 yards; Hill completed 23 of 36 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns.

The Hawks, up 28-21 at halftime, broke away with a 21-point third quarter, beginning when Lavon Chaney returned the second-half kickoff 60 yards. Asante capped the six-play drive with his fourth TD, a 14-yard run.

Monmouth held Delaware State to 29 yards rushing — just 1 in the first half. Gilbert Rivera was intercepted twice and the Hornets converted only 2 of 12 third downs.
