MURRAY, Ky. (AP) — Janawski Davis had three receiving touchdowns and added a 62-yard punt return for a score, helping Murray State coast past Union College of the NAIA 73-26 on Thursday night.
CJ Bennett threw for 167 yards and five touchdowns for the Racers (1-0).
Murray State jumped out to a 28-7 lead in the first quarter, sparked by Shawn Samuels-Connell’s 68-yard punt return touchdown and two touchdown passes from Bennett to Jeremy Harness.
Bennett threw his fifth touchdown pass, an 11-yarder to Davis, to push the lead to 60-19 in the third quarter. KD Humphries relieved Bennett on the next series and continued the rout, connecting with Paul Rice on a 34-yard score.
Nick Taylor had 11 rushes for 82 yards and a score for Murray State.
LaVance Andersons had two rushing touchdowns for Union (0-1). His 12-yard score in the first quarter pulled the Bulldogs within 14, but they couldn’t pull any closer as the Racers rolled to a 52-13 halftime lead.
