Dangerous evening for bicyclists in Anne Arundel County

WASHINGTON — It was a really bad evening for bicyclists in Anne Arundel County on Saturday.

There were two unrelated accidents in different parts of the county which sent three people to the hospital.

In the first accident, a 62-year-old Arlington woman was hit by a light colored Honda SUV in Davidsonville. Police are looking for the driver who fled the scene. It happened shortly after 5 p.m. on Central Avenue (Route 214) by the Patuxent River Bridge.

Anne Arundel County Police Lieutenant T.J. Smith says, “We believe there actually would be some physical damage on the vehicle.”

The driver of the silver or white SUV is described as a white man between 50 and 60 years of age with a gray mustache. Lieutenant Smith says the driver was last seen heading into Prince George’s County from Anne Arundel County.

The victim was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma where she is in critical but stable condition.

A second woman who was cycling with the victim fell during the crash. She was taken to Washington Hospital Center where she was treated and released.

Later in Severna Park around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, a 14-year-old was hit by a car while trying to cross Ritchie Highway at Leelyn Drive against the light.

Lieutenant Smith says,”This kid thought he could make it. Unfortunately he got hit by a vehicle and he was flown to Johns Hopkins Pediatrics.”

The 14-year old suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Smith says he’s hoping for a quick recovery for those involved in these tragic and unfortunate accidents. And he’s grateful that these accidents did not turn out to be deadly.

The lieutenant wants to remind everyone that as the weather begins warming up in the coming months that more bicyclists and pedestrians will be out.

He says, “We all need to work together and share the road.”

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call the Traffic Safety Section at 410-222-8573.
