Gift ideas: A new HEXBUGS habitat, plush bacon and more

WASHINGTON – While looking for toys to get your kid this holiday season, you can go high-tech or low-tech and still have plenty of options.

Video games aren’t the only high-tech toys. Those tiny high-speed HEXBUGS have a new holiday Habitat.

“There are little pegs, there are merry-go-rounds, teeter-totters, multiple levels, and you put their HEXBUGS in there and they watch them come to life,” says toy expert Elizabeth Werner.

Think Geek has bugs of a different kind – Giant Plush Microbes including the common cold virus, chicken pox and more, including a plush pork product called My First Bacon.

Smokey the Fire Truck is Matchbox’s follow-up to Rocky the Robot Truck and Stinky the Garbage Truck. He talks, his mouth moves, and Smokey even has a water cannon.

“It shoots little balls, not real water,” says Werner. “As a mom I wouldn’t want real water all over the house.”

Less high-tech but very imaginative is Lego’s build-it-yourself board game Heroica.

“There’s no cardboard, you build the board game out of Legos. It’s full of strategy, fabulous for little minds working together.”

Four players can play these four games individually, or combine all four into one.

Characters include “The Barbarian,” “Goblin King” and many others.
