2 great-grandmothers get in altercation at birth of great-grandchildren

WASHINGTON — Two great-grandmothers came to blows in the maternity ward of a hospital where their shared great-grandchildren were born. The fight caused both grannies to ultimately get kicked out of the Heritage Valley Beaver Hospital in Pennsylvania, CBS Pittsburgh reports.

While the incident occurred on Aug. 31, 2014, the recent criminal complaint states that Shirley Irvin, 72, of Enon Valley, was waiting for her twin great-grandchildren to be born. Her grandson is the father of the babies.

Other relatives were in the waiting room with Irvin including Carole Alberts, the great-grandmother of the woman giving birth.

The complaint says, Alberts made a comment to her daughter saying she was worried about her great grand babies. Irvin both overheard Alberts and disagreed with her comment.

Alberts says Irvin then approached to hit and shove her in the upper part of her chest and arm after they started arguing.

The complaint says Alberts’ daughter intervened to break up the two when Irvin swung and punched her on the left side of her head knocking her hearing implant off.

The great-grandmother has been charged with simple assault and harassment and her preliminary hearing is scheduled for next week, according to the complaint.
