The hike in prices comes as supply sources shrink, particularly in the eastern U.S. A refinery in the Virgin Islands is about to close.

The Energy Department said two refineries in the Delaware Valley owned by Sunoco and ConocoPhillip have been idled and Sunoco plans to idle another by the middle of this year.

“The complete idling of the three refineries would collectively cut as much as 50 percent of current East Coast refining capacity,” the Energy Department said.
