Overturned tractor-trailer spills caulking, adhesives

WASHINGTON – Southbound Interstate 95 has reopened after a tractor-trailer crashed into another vehicle and overturned in Dale City, Va., Wednesday morning, spilling industrial adhesives and causing major delays for commuters.

The tractor-trailer loaded with caulking and other industrial adhesives was travelling south on I-95 about 10:30 a.m. when it hit the back of a highway crash- cushion truck, which was protecting a street sweeper, the Virginia State Police says.

The impact of the crash caused the rig to overturn, landing on top of a Jersey barrier and rupturing the trailer. The contents of the trailer spilled over the roadway, according to police.

Dean A. Brames, 48, of Palm Bay, Fla., was driving the rig and was charged with reckless driving. He was taken to Potomac Hospital with minor injuries and later released, police say.

The crash and cleanup closed most southbound lanes on the interstate after the exit for Dale Boulevard until about 1:20 p.m. However delays lingered and the service road and ramps to Dale Boulevard didn’t reopen to traffic until just before 4 p.m.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story said the tractor trailer carried coffee. Virginia State Police later updated their information to industrial adhesives. We regret the error.
