Utilities to start shutting off customers who haven't paid up

June 27, 2009 - 11:51am

WASHINGTON - When electric and gas bills spiked in our region last winter, Maryland regulators stepped in to give customers more time to pay. Now, utilities are finally beginning to shut off service to thousands.

The problem was so big, utilities like Pepco and Baltimore Gas and Electric were ordered in March not to shut off service to any customers and instead offer them payment plans. But even when utilities reached out to struggling customers multiple times, many never responded.

Allegheny Power began turning off the juice to overdue customers earlier this month, and BGE followed suit this week. At last check, about 74,000 BGE customers were in danger of losing service. The Baltimore Sun reports Pepco plans to start turning off power to late customers on Monday.
