Skip the line at the D.C. DMV

June 30, 2008 - 5:02am
Mark Segraves, WTOP Radio

WASHINGTON -- There is now a way to skip one of the dreadfully long lines at the D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles.

While the line at the District's only vehicle inspection at 1001 Half Street, SW, usually results in cars sometimes wrapping around the block, the D.C. DMV now lets you skip the line by scheduling an inspection appointment online.

A link on the District's DMV Web site lets you make a reservation, print a confirmation and present the confirmation on the day of the appointment.

"We will bring that customer and bring him in front of all the other waiting customers," says Gregory Simpson, the inspection station manager.

The station averages 76 reservations a day.

"The launch of our Web-based scheduled appointments system provides a means to efficiently utilize resources during non-peak times by minimizing customer wait time," said D.C. DMV Director Lucinda Babers.

Online reservations can be made from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

The inspection station still operates on a first-come, first-serve basis during normal hours of operation.
