WASHINGTON -- If you're hoping to win the parking lottery and snag one of those 180 parking spaces in the tiny lot near the Tidal Basin to see the cherry blossom, forget it.

The National Park Service plans to close the lot when the annual Cherry Blossom Festival gets underway this weekend.

The Park Service made the decision because of the gridlock caused by traffic in the area.

The lot will be used for an information trailer, food stands, gift and book tents, portable restrooms and a first-aid area, says National Park Service spokesman Bill Line.

So where should you park?

Consider Hains Point.

Starting Friday, when the festival begins, a lot there will offer 800 free spots. The Park Service has designated several parking areas for the disabled.

A free "Blossom Shuttle" will take you to and from the Tidal Basin. The shuttle will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and repeat its route every 20 to 30 minutes, with 11 stops along the way.
