Woman Shot in Head in D.C.

June 1, 2007 - 3:57pm
WASHINGTON - A woman is in critical condition after being shot in the head at a bus stop in Northwest on Friday.

The woman was waiting for a Metro bus at a crowded stop at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Columbia Road when she was shot in the head by a man who fled on a bicycle, D.C. Police say.

The shooting occurred just before 9 a.m., as students at nearby Bruce Monroe Elementary School were starting classes.

Marta Palacios, the principal of Bruce-Monroe Elementary School, has ordered that recess will be held indoors, and has called in counselors.

Palacios says that four students were just entering the school when the shooting occured.

"They heard the shots and they saw somebody on the floor."

Parents are irate that this level of violence occurred just outside of their school, but Palacios insists that the students are safe.

The woman, who is described as a Latino woman in her mid to late 30s, is in critical condition at Howard University Hospital.

Police are looking for suspects and say they are not sure why the woman was targeted.
