D.C. Works to Make Some Sidewalks Safer

May 9, 2007 - 11:44am
Mark Segraves, WTOP Radio

WASHINGTON - Work has started to make sidewalks along the Georgia Avenue corridor in upper Northwest safer.

The work will be done from Fern Street to the Maryland state line.

In some places, sidewalks and curbs will be reconstructed. In others, such as Geranium Street, sidewalks will be built for the very first time.

Other upgrades will include wheelchair ramps and high visibility pavement marking.

The District's Department of Transportation currently manages about 1,600 miles of sidewalks in the city.

The work along Georgia Avenue, which is part of the effort to revitalize the area, will continue through the summer,

Parking restrictions will be enforced during the construction but traffic should not be affected.
