WASHINGTON — Prince George’s police identified the mother of a newborn baby said to be found abandoned on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Prince George’s County police said the woman who initially called 911 admitted to being the child’s mother and that “at no point was the baby left alone outside.”
“She had given birth inside her Beltsville home that morning and tells our detectives she became overwhelmed,” according to a news release.
On Wednesday, police said a woman who identified herself as a neighbor called 911 around 11:45 a.m. saying she found a crying newborn outside her home on Shoal Creek Terrace.
Law enforcement responded to the call and found the woman with the child inside her home. They took the child to a local hospital where doctors said she appeared to be in good health.
A spokeswoman for the police department said the child was never outside and remained in her mother’s direct care until authorities arrived.
The mother is receiving medical treatment, police say.
Child protective services will continue to oversee custody of the infant, police say.
Criminal charges will not be filed at this time.
