WASHINGTON – Cars and bikes have duked it out for generations. With more people opting to peddle to work, sharing the road has become more important and confusing.
The Maryland State Highway Administration is hoping to reduce that confusion and create safer roads by installing new signs indicating where cyclists have the right to a full lane.
Maryland has already posted nine signs along MD-953 in Glen Dale with plans for more signs along 18 state roads in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties, reports Greater Greater Washington.
State highway officials tell GGW the new signs will be posted along roads where the lanes are narrow and there is no shoulder for bikes to stay to the right. This includes River Road, Wisconsin Ave, and Georgia Avenue in Montgomery County and Greenbelt Road, Riggs Road, and Annapolis Road in Prince George’s County.
