Local songwriters to compete for $10K prize

WASHINGTON — So you think you can write a song?

Local aspiring songwriters have the chance to win $10,000 and perform in front of a live audience thanks to a new contest accepting applications through Dec. 5.

Performers of all ages and levels to are encouraged to apply to the Bethesda Bernard Ebb Songwriting Awards.

The competition was founded by Cathy Bernard, president of the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District and niece of the legendary Broadway lyricist Fred Ebb, who collaborated with artists such as Liza Minnelli and Judy Garland.

“I am personally honored to be able to support this important program in my uncle’s name because the musical arts were such an integral part of who he was,” Bernard says.

“It’s of great importance to continue honoring creativity and aspiring songwriters.”

Artists from all genres are welcome to apply. They must be residents of D.C., Maryland or Virginia and have not earned more than $5,000 in royalties.

Judging will be based on composition, lyrics, originality, melody and harmony. Jury panels include members of the local arts scene; including Eric Schaffer, the co-founder and artistic director at Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia, and country music star Chuck Mead.
