Most NFL fans think Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson should only be allowed to play again if he is found not guilty of felony child abuse, according to the latest Associated Press-GfK poll.
In all, 54 percent of those surveyed said Peterson should return to the NFL if he is cleared in his Texas legal case. He is charged with injury to a child for admittedly using a wooden switch to spank his 4-year-old son.
According to the poll, 29 percent think Peterson should be allowed to play regardless of the outcome of his case, while 15 percent think he should never be allowed to play again.
Male fans (34 percent) were more likely than female fans (22 percent) to think Peterson should be allowed to play regardless of the outcome. And 45 percent of black fans but only 25 percent of white fans think Peterson should be allowed to play again regardless of the outcome of his case, the survey found.
The AP-GfK Poll was conducted Sept. 25-29 using KnowledgePanel, GfK’s probability-based panel designed to be representative of the U.S. population. It involved online interviews with 1,845 adults, including 836 NFL fans. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points for all respondents and plus or minus 3.8 percentage points for NFL fans.
Respondents were selected randomly using phone or mail survey methods, and were later interviewed online. People selected for KnowledgePanel who didn’t otherwise have access to the Internet were given free access.
